Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) August 14, 2011

Grantham University , a 60-year-old institution delivering accredited online degrees to working adult students around the world, is a proud sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday, Aug. 14.

This is the third consecutive year Grantham has supported the race as a $10,000 Silver Sponsor. Additionally, the University has a team of 52 runner/walkers set to head to the 7:30 a.m. race start at the historic Union Station.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate and the Grantham University community has certainly been affected,” said Dr. Fred Snow, president of Grantham. “Nearly 300,000 women and men in America will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. That’s 300,000 too many in our estimation. Grantham is proud to give back to the community by raising money to aid in efforts to eradicate the disease.”

In addition to the sponsorship, Team Grantham already has raised more than $3,500. The money was collected through donations and events such as a bake sale, pie-throwing event, golf tournament and car wash. All of the monies raised at the race will be used for research, education, screening and treatment programs, with up to 75 percent of the money staying in the Kansas City area, where Grantham’s headquarters is located.

Grantham University’s accredited online degree programs are flexible and portable, allowing students to fit education into their life instead of arranging life around their education. The University offers a variety of associate, bachelor and master’s online degrees . In 2010, the University launched the College of Nursing and Allied Health which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in: Nursing , Health Sciences, and Medical Coding and Billing.

Kim Kaiser, York County’s new emergency management director, said the thing she likes most about her job is theunpredictability.

She spent most of the day Monday at a fire scene in Old OrchardBeach, manning the county’s emergency command vehicle andcoordinating the logistics involved in the multiple-agencyresponse.

Another day might be spent mostly at her desk, planning for naturaldisasters and doing necessary administrative work.

When asked about her agency’s essential role, Kaiser said, “Whensomebody needs help, that’s when we’re there.”

Kaiser came to York County in May after serving as the deputydirector for emergency management in Lincoln County. A Mainenative, she was born in Lewiston and raised in Topsham.

During the short time she’s been on the job in the state’ssouthernmost county, Kaiser said she’s come to respect her staffand the volunteer spirit she’s encountered here.

Kaiser now lives in Old Orchard Beach with her family ” husbandJames and four daughters ” and said the biggest differencesbetween York and Lincoln counties are the size of the area she’sresponsible for and the beaches.

“There are a lot of similarities in my duties,” she said. “But, newchallenges include the beaches. I’m not used to dealing with asandy shoreline. Also, this is twice the size of county that I amused to.”

Kaiser applied for the director’s position in York County bothbecause it was “the next logical step” on her career path andbecause she had a high regard for the retiring director, BobBowman.

“I admired and emulated (Bowman) for years so this seemed like itwould be a nice fit,” she said.

Kaiser said the transition has been “smooth” and added that Bowmanhired and trained “a great staff.” As the director of emergencymanagement in York County, Kaiser oversees a staff of three, alongwith five volunteers.

“What’s great is that I knew all the people in this office,” shesaid. “I already had great relationships with them before I evenwalked through the door.”

Kaiser’s basic role is to coordinate first responder services andto advise local government officials during disasters and otheremergencies. She also acts as a liaison between the countycommissioners and the communities in York County.

In addition, her office is also responsible for declaring anemergency and then helping local officials apply for emergencyassistance from the state and federal government.

Kaiser was originally an accountant, but became an emergencymedical technician and firefighter after meeting her husband. Sheis now an intermediate EMT and spent 10 years working as a medicaltechnician.

She was also a firefighter for five years in the town of Woolwich, where she served as the fire chief’s assistant, as well.

Before moving on to a career in emergency management, Kaiserenrolled in a three-year training program offered by the FederalEmergency Management Agency.

She has since earned a bachelor’s degree in emergency managementand is hoping to get accepted into a master’s program at AmericanMilitary University, which offers online degrees.”This is the bestjob in the world,” she said of her York County position. “This jobcan change in 5 seconds, so I am never bored.”

Although it may seem like a misnomer, the term “virtual education” has taken on a whole new interpretation in today’s technological society. Virtual education has come to mean higher education via the Internet. In other words, virtual education means an online school, college or university. Students who obtain their education over the Web on a computer are said to have completed a virtual education.

Now, some may laugh at the idea of a virtual education, taking it to mean a “pretend” or “almost” education. Nothing could be further from the truth! Computer savvy students, as well as online educators and enterprising employers, all know that a degree from an online school, online college, or online university is as good as, or better than a campus-based education. Students are able to study at their own convenience and at a pace that is less rigid than a traditional school. This flexibility allows individual students to receive an excellent education while keeping stress to a minimum.

Students taking the path to online degrees can select from hundreds of career-enhancing programs, ranging from certificates and diplomas to PhDs. Many students will start out taking online courses in such subjects as Business, Business Administration, Accounting, Business Management, Health Care, Computers, Information Technology, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, Engineering, or Graphic Design, to name a few. From there, the student can go on to specialize in their chosen field, earning online bachelor degrees, online master degrees, and even online doctorate degrees.

Keep in mind, distance learning is not a breeze. Students are expected to devote at least 12-15 hours of online study per week. And, depending on the chosen field of study, there may be some hands-on experience or lab work required. These are some prime reasons why students looking into virtual education should be sure to thoroughly investigate the online college curriculum to be sure any prerequisites can be met before enrollment commences. As curriculums can vary from school to school, so do online course duration and tuition costs.

Still wondering if virtual education is right for you? If you are a working adult, stay-at-home-parent, or if you just have big career ambitions and little time, a virtual education may just be your ticket to success!

To learn more about Virtual Education we urge you to search our site for Online Schools, Online Colleges, and Online Universities.

Many unscrupulous individuals are known to be operating from their homes, posing to be the officials of well-known universities and invite you to join their online college degree. Trinity University is suing an entity that offers online degrees, accusing it of trademark infringement.

The San Antonio liberal arts and sciences university seeks a federal court order barring Trinity Learning Foundation from using ” Trinity University ” on its website or using that name to promote its programs.

The suit was filed Thursday in San Antonio

Trinity Learning Foundation, headquartered in Delaware, did not respond to requests for comment.

“Because they are using our name, we feel it’s an infringement of our registered trademark and can lead to trademark dilution,” said Mary Denny , associate director of communications for Trinity University. “We’re very proud of our reputation.”

Trinity Learning Foundation’s website says it offers graduate information technology degrees, a master’s in business administration and bachelor’s degrees in nursing and health management, among others.

But some of those degrees are offered under “Trinity University” on the foundation’s website, including degrees the San Antonio institution doesn’t offer. It’s “a complete infringement and could be damaging to our reputation,” Denny said.

This isn’t the first time Trinity University has battled over its name. In 2007, it settled a trademark lawsuit with Trinity College in Washington over that entity’s attempt to change its name to Trinity University.

Additionally, Trinity University reached a settlement in 2004 with a diploma mill then known as Trinity College University.

That deal ended a lawsuit in which the university said Trinity College University ” registered in the British Virgin Islands but with purported offices in Louisiana ” infringed on the Trinity University trademark.
