Although it may seem like a misnomer, the term “virtual education” has taken on a whole new interpretation in today’s technological society. Virtual education has come to mean higher education via the Internet. In other words, virtual education means an online school, college or university. Students who obtain their education over the Web on a computer are said to have completed a virtual education.

Now, some may laugh at the idea of a virtual education, taking it to mean a “pretend” or “almost” education. Nothing could be further from the truth! Computer savvy students, as well as online educators and enterprising employers, all know that a degree from an online school, online college, or online university is as good as, or better than a campus-based education. Students are able to study at their own convenience and at a pace that is less rigid than a traditional school. This flexibility allows individual students to receive an excellent education while keeping stress to a minimum.

Students taking the path to online degrees can select from hundreds of career-enhancing programs, ranging from certificates and diplomas to PhDs. Many students will start out taking online courses in such subjects as Business, Business Administration, Accounting, Business Management, Health Care, Computers, Information Technology, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, Engineering, or Graphic Design, to name a few. From there, the student can go on to specialize in their chosen field, earning online bachelor degrees, online master degrees, and even online doctorate degrees.

Keep in mind, distance learning is not a breeze. Students are expected to devote at least 12-15 hours of online study per week. And, depending on the chosen field of study, there may be some hands-on experience or lab work required. These are some prime reasons why students looking into virtual education should be sure to thoroughly investigate the online college curriculum to be sure any prerequisites can be met before enrollment commences. As curriculums can vary from school to school, so do online course duration and tuition costs.

Still wondering if virtual education is right for you? If you are a working adult, stay-at-home-parent, or if you just have big career ambitions and little time, a virtual education may just be your ticket to success!

With the gaining popularity of the Internet over the past 25 years, thousands of online schools have cropped up across the US and Canada – some good and some not so much. And, while there are a lot of excellent online colleges and universities that are fully accredited and qualified to provide quality undergraduate and degree programs, there are also quite a few diploma mills that will issue unimpressive credentials not worth a second glance. The choices can be overwhelming, so let’s start with some basic guidelines to choosing the right online school.

First and foremost, whether you are researching online colleges and universities, or traditional, campus-based colleges, you should be sure to verify that your school is accredited by an agency recognized by either the United States Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or both. Schools that are accredited by these agencies must pass the same rigorous criteria as campus-based schools, and their educational worth is assured if they carry these credentials.

There are also regional accrediting agencies that can add value to your diploma or degree from an online school. Even though online studies can theoretically be accessed from any state, the school you choose will necessarily have a physical base that is housed in a particular state, and there are several agencies that are authorized to accredit online colleges and universities by region. These regional accrediting agencies would include the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Northwestern Association of Schools and Colleges, Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement.

Next, take a long and careful look at the specific online degree programs that are being offered. As an example, you will qualify to enroll in an online master degree program only if you have completed your undergraduate degrees (Associate degrees and Bachelor degrees). Inquire as to the number of credit hours you will be required to commit in order to complete your chosen level of degree.

Then, find out how and when your online classes will be accessible. For instance, if the class if taught through teleclasses, you will most likely be required to be at your computer at a certain hour several times a week to participate in a real-time, live class. Or, will you be able to access class assignments anytime, 24 hours a day at your convenience? Are there strict time restrictions on completing assignments; or does the online course provide for a flexible learning path? These are all important considerations when selecting the right online school.

Lastly, be sure to find out if there will be any on-site visit requirements anytime during the term of your online education, and where and when these visits are expected to take place. While most online courses can be completed without ever leaving the comfort of your own home, there are some that require the students’ physical attendance for exams or practical demonstrations where you must be present to prove acquired skills (such as some of the online medical courses). Those who are unable to travel or conform to a rigid timetable will be wise to take note of these types of requirements when choosing an online course of study.

With these guidelines in mind, you should have no trouble locating excellent online schools that will completely meet or exceed your educational goals. Remember, the admissions departments of any reputable school will be happy to discuss their accreditation, credentials, tuition, financial assistance, diploma and degree programs, and any other topic that can help you decide which online school, college or university will be the best choice for you. You can start now by contacting a few promising schools on our website today and requesting in-depth information. These steps will help you develop the confidence you need to make an informed decision for a brighter future.

Considering the busy lives we lead today, is it any wonder that online schools are becoming more and more popular? Thousands of working adults and other “late learners” are turning to online colleges and universities to gain an advantage and get ahead. The main reason people turn to online studies is convenience, but there are many other good reasons to pursue an online education.

Certainly, the flexibility of online courses is a great advantage. Online colleges and online universities almost always offer a flexible class schedule that can be accessed 24 hours a day. Students can study at times that are convenient, and at a pace that suits each individual. What a great way to get back to college to complete your degree!

If you are wondering if online degrees carry as much weight as those from campus-based colleges, the answer is “yes!” Accredited online schools present the same curriculum and offer the same level of education as any other college. But, it is very important to make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Accreditation is your assurance that your degree will be well regarded when seeking employment. An accredited school will be more than willing to provide this credential, while those that are not accredited will pretend that accreditation is not important.

Depending on the specific school and your particular field of study, you can obtain all levels of higher education. The educational possibilities are practically unlimited. From professional certificates online, to online associate degrees, online bachelor degrees, online master degrees, and even online doctorate degrees, online schools could be the answer you have been looking for.

The Internet has established a modern approach to earning an education by providing students with the option to gain certificates and degrees online. With the continued expansion of technology and sustained demand from students, colleges and universities supply online degree programs. The opportunities available cover an exceptional mixture of professional industries.

Online learning is available to everyone, which is making the popularity of what it offers increase yearly. Whether students want to take specific courses or gain a degree they can find a school that offers what they need. One of the most valued aspects of online learning is that it allows students to study from home. The accessibility is extremely helpful for disabled individuals who can’t commute to a college every day, and for students who can’t attend a traditional college due to work and family responsibility. Many people are utilizing online schools to gain advanced degrees that allow them to step into top-level jobs inside respected fields. The prospects and benefits of online learning are making it possible for individuals in all walks of life to earn certificates and degrees.

Online certificate programs help students in a few key ways. Students who can’t enroll in a full degree program can work through a certificate program to gain college credit in their chosen field. This helps students because they can transfer earned credits to a degree program. This is also applicable to students that don’t have very much extra time to devote to studies. Online certificates are great for this purpose because many only take around three months to complete. Many postgraduate students use certificate programs to gain more specialized training or learn a new program or technique. For example, a financial professional can enroll in an online program to learn the new computer program needed for their job.

Associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs offer a balanced education that allows students to enter entry-level positions. Study generally consists of general education and degree concentrated courses. An online bachelor’s degree in business for instance would have coursework on humanities, English, and science that focus on providing online education in accounting, marketing, and management. Almost all online programs at the associate and bachelor level are designed this way to establish a strong base in education for the professional world.

Inside an online master’s degree or doctorate degree program students focus on advanced professional skills. A master’s degree typically requires students to complete 60 credit hours, which is around two years of schooling. Although some coursework includes general education study overall schooling focuses heavily on learning advanced career skills. Knowledge earned provides students with the ability to step into corporate and managerial positions. Doctorate degree programs teach students to become experts in their respected fields and typically provide education for students that want to become researchers and professors.

Accredited online degree opportunities leave everything up to students, from choosing the correct degree to learning. Degrees can be earned in nursing, business, mass media, advertising, and much more. Students who can’t attend a traditional college but want to earn an education should consider enrolling in an online degree program. People who are dedicated, self-motivated, and want to attain success will find an online program for their goals.

After leaving her job as a college professor to become an office director for Buena Vista University Le Mars, Kaylyn Pick didn’t expect to teach again. But Pick returned to the classroom just a few years later, only this time around, the classroom is her computer and she never actually sees her students.

BVU has offered online courses for quite some time, but only started its full online degree program about five years ago. Several majors are available to students, in a variety of fields, and around 50 classes are offered each term. Picks teaches Conflict Management, The Interviewing Process, and Dramatic Literature.

Most of Picks online students are nontraditional learners. Many adults who may already have jobs or families choose to pursue an online degree, either to advance their career or change fields. At the beginning of each term, Pick asks students to introduce themselves via message board, but she learns more about their personalities by reading written assignments.

Pick says that although she is the instructor, online courses are student driven. Generally, the main appeal of online courses is that they allow students to work from a home computer based on a time schedule that is most convenient for them, unlike classes in a ground school which require attendance and assignment completion according to a strict schedule. And one of the main advantages of online education applies to teachers as well as students-living on campus is not required. BVU employs about 100 teachers from 31 different states.

Picks enjoys being a teacher, because “with teaching, you gain so much more from your students than you will provide for them.” She finds it interesting to engage with students, even in an online classroom because “you do all the regular classroom activities, but in a written rather than verbal format.”
